Murun ginya bila (Living Rivers)
The Wiradjuri Nation are known as the people of the three rivers, the Wambool (Macquarie River), the Kalari (Lachlan River) and Murrumbidjeri (Murrumbidgee River). As a Wiradjuri artist living on Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri Country, my artwork is an aerial view of the Murrumbidgee River giving life to the Australian Capital Territory and its urban areas.
Thick electric blue depicts the Murrumbidgee River joining the Molonglo River which also supports the capital city of Australia through Lake Burley Griffin. On the far right of the artwork the Googong Dam joins Queanbeyan River continuing on to join the Molonglo River. On the far left of Canberra’s bordering ranges, the Cotter Dam then connects to the Murrumbidgee River. South of Canberra the Tuggeranong Lake and Tuggeranong Creek flows into the mighty Murrumbidgee.
Healthy rivers and clean water are crucial to human survival and the lives of many animals.
Having been born on Ngarigo Country and moving to Canberra 13 years ago, I feel a strong connection to the Murrumbidgee River. My artwork sends a message to our communities that protecting our main rivers is core to caring for Country.
