Possum Skin Cloak Exhibition Dabee Country
The cloaks are a contemporary representation of Male and Female back patches of tapestry stitching.
The Male possum skin shows off the long-feathered tail flowing from the back stitched image representing his dance to entice the female.
The Female possum skin the less extravagant feathered tail but gives birth to their story of the lovers meeting with symbols of gender and the new baby.
The First Nations residency was accommodated near Kandos, on a property close to the pagodas. As hot fires affected the land before the artist residency the environment experienced change and bought the Lyrebirds closer than usual to the property buildings. With multiple sightings our First Nations Group began talking about and creating projects of the local songbird. A dance was developed with song, by Jo Clancy. I was deeply moved and wrote a poem of my experience and decided to patch work the story of the Lyrebird’s characteristics.
